SIM Recording!

Last weekend, my acappella group Stuck in the Middle (SIM) recorded at Middlebury College. It was three grueling days of singing, listening, tweaking, etc. Overall, despite that many hours in the studio, we had a fantastic and productive time. Look for the SIM CD release to be sometime next year, after we record a few more songs next Fall. This time we recorded six songs:

Apologize (OneRepublic)
Thriller (Michael Jackson)
Sweetest Girl (Wyclef Jean et al.)
Everyday Love (Rascall Flats)
Lullaby (Josh Groban)
Arco Arena (Cake)

    Dr. Horrible

Recently a secret santa gift yielded something that I had no idea existed: an odd combination of singing and blogging in Dr. Horrible. Check it out with surprisingly well-written music and lyrics put to good work by Doogie Howser. This is a great example of episodic online content that is well produced (clearly well written and shot) but also very entertaining and engaging in a real way.

    SIM Circus Review

Catching up on some end of the year events. My acappella group, Stuck in the Middle, held our final concert on the last day of classes for the Fall semester at Middlebury College. We did “SIM Circus,” an epic concert that featured the members of the groups as various “acts.” We also invited the talented Flying Fists Juggling Brigade which provided the actually hard feats of stilt-walking and glow-in-the-dark juggling. Fun times all around with the premier of our version of the Michael Jackson favorite “Thriller” and a few other songs that we learned this semester.

Overall, I was really happy with a solid semester for SIM. As the music director, I tallied up our stats: 22 performances in three or so months. Our most oft sung songs were: Beautiful Thing (Sister Hazel), Apologize (OneRepublic), Joy to the World (Three Dog Night), and Hold My Hand (?).

    China Music Radar

And finally, my now-somewhat-dated article about music events during the Olympics is finally up on China Music Radar. I researched this article while working for Splitworks. Here’s a sample:

In keeping with their stellar track record of providing zany Olympics fun for the entire family (Cool Runnings, anyone?), the Jamaican government is bringing us what is perhaps the only satisfyingly meaty show announced for the Olympics. Julian “Juju” Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley will be performing on August 16th at Star Live Club, a stone’s throw from the major tourist attraction of Lama Temple. Opening for Marley is “The Beijing Live Experience”, featuring the sounds of MC Webber and MC Essention. After the show is the “Julian Marley/Team Jamaica celebrity after-party” at high-end club CJW.
