Jury Duty

I’ve been summoned for Jury Duty by the Superior Court in the City and County of San Francisco. As I turn 19 in August, it never occured to me that I could be summoned. When you turn 18, you think of the major things: the draft, voting, lottery, porn, cigarettes, legal adult so your parents can kick you out an any time, etc. You don’t think of your new-found public duty in the everyday sense. I suppose I have to agree with Ben Casnocha in saying being being a civil servant (at least temporarily, in this case) is underecognized. It’s important and necessary.

That said, I still feel like Jury Duty is a nuisance. Trudging down to the courthouse and wading through the bureaucracy is not that appealing. Regardless, I will be out of town during my summons date so it looks like a postponement is in store…
