In China, a Musical Star Is Waiting to Be Born

Jon Shia turned me on to this article in the New York Times published on July 30th. It is about a 17 year old working to become a Broadway star from the outskirts of Beijing. It’s interesting to read about how traditional American musicals are seeping into the Chinese imagination of the artistic. Ironically enough, the American musical is, at the same time, slipping away from the American mindset. Broadway is having a tough time bringing audiences in to see the never-ending spectacle of glitz continue. Tony award numbers are down signficantly. Talking to Mr. Tseng, a contact at Shantou University, he explained the popularity of touring musicals coming to China (big cities like Shanghai mostly) both put on by foreign and local performers.
