Miss America and Beyond!

It’s not everyday that you get to know a Miss Vermont (possibly Miss America) candidate. I met Rachel Ann Cole (’08) in the production of “The Five Hysterical Girls Theorem” over this past semester. She is a kind, warming individual who I could never imagine as a beauty pageant type. Well not at least in that Miss Congeniality way…. What would compel her, a student at Middlebury College, to take up a beauty pageant? That seems so foreign in this land of academic oasis. Maybe I’ve got Miss America all wrong. Someone can set me straight about the talents of Miss America…
I certainly have met my share of Miss Chinatowns and Junior Miss Chinatowns…

P.S. Definitely see Little Miss Sunshine, if you haven’t already. More pageant fun.

  1. I met Erika Ebbel, the 2004 Miss Massachusetts once. She was a graduate of MIT in Chemistry and is a grad student at Boston University for some biomedical field. She told me she has won a lot of money (scholarships) through these contests (beauty and science fairs). She runs a foundation called WhizKids… very interesting. http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2004/missmass.html
